“Penticton Top 40 under 40 is presented by Prospera Credit Union in partnership with the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Commerce and JCI Penticton, with support from Community Futures Okanagan Similkameen”
For Wendy Goudie, owner of Get Bent Yoga and Wellness Recreation Centre, taking a step back turned out to be the greatest step forward in overcoming her obstacles.
A year after having their lovely daughter Cheysa, Wendy was facing challenges to her physical and mental health while trying to maintain her business through its most challenging year and her husband John made the difficult decision of leaving his career to dedicate fully to Get Bent’s success.
What got her through this difficult time in part was relying on Get Bent’s wellness programs. Taking a step back from “always being the “leader”, and to be one of the people on the mat hurting and being the one hiding in the back of the room in dance class and not wanting to face the mirror. It was truly a great lesson to experience the support of teachers and safety of the studio.”
Reflecting now on that difficult time, Wendy’s experience has affected her deeply “It’s taken a while, but now I can see the benefit of going through such experiences. Already, I teach differently, I’ve had a huge perspective adjustment.”
Get Bent’s mission has always been to “build healthy individuals and a healthy community”. With her dedicated team of 20 to 30 staff and volunteers whom she lovingly refers to as “Team Sparkle”, this mission drives everything Get Bent chooses to participate in. From the Get Bent Active Arts Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to “support youth in need, promote youth leadership and build cultural arts through the province.” to the Get Bent Esteem Team, “a volunteer based group of youth that teach workshops in public schools on anti-bullying, self-esteem and the media’s influence on body image” to offering youth scholarships for youth in need in the Okanagan, Wendy and the rest of Team Sparkle are dedicated to giving back to their community.
As a result of this strong and generous community spirit, Get Bent has been getting great recognition in the Okanagan arts community and beyond. Get Bent was voted the #1 yoga studio in the South Okanagan for 2009 and 2010 and has grown to be the largest Yoga centre in the South Okanagan and is the only Yoga Centre to offer Iyengar Style Yoga. It is also Western Canada’s largest Belly Dance school and was awarded the Health and Wellness Award by SOWINS for its outstanding efforts to promote health and wellness throughout BC and the Contribution to Dance Award from the Arts Council in 2012 and was nominated for Arts Educator of the Year in 2014 by both the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan and the Penticton Arts Council.
Wendy is thankful for the support she has received from her amazing team and is continually inspired by “the fact that I was fortunate enough to wake up and have the health I do, the opportunities that our society beings and chance to make a difference to others.”
